The Lightning is the official school paper of Upper Bicutan
National High School for English with a tagline, “WHERE INFORMATION STRIKES FAST’’.
Frequently asked Questions:
1. Why
The Lightning?
Lightning
creates flashes of lights and it has electricity once it hits, it strikes and
when it strikes it might help or it might not. Lightning has pros and cons.
Just like lightning, information strikes fast.
2. How
did it start?
The
chosen School Paper Advisers (Filipino and English. No idea that they are the
advisers) attended a Journalism Seminar and that’s it. The rest is history.
3. How
was the journalists chosen?
The
adviser is handling section 2, next to pilot section. Editor-in-chief was
chosen from this section and acted as
all around editor. Smart student has smart friends. It’s a law of recommendation.
4.
How does it work?
Articles are submitted online.
E-mail and emailing is a must. Advisers just met them thrice and made several
trainings and Voila! They can make articles. Most of them were journalists
during their elementary days so they know the basics. Students are talented
enough. Some can draw. Cartoonists. Some knows how to use Adobe Photoshop.
Lay-out Artists. Some are talkers. Researchers. They can write. That’s good
enough to be called WRITERS.
5.
Hardships so far?
A lot. Public school means not
enough facilities. Students and SPAs don’t have rooms to do the tasks. They don’t
have computers. What’s good is that the SPAs have laptops, personal laptops. So
they lent it to the students. The SPAs borrowed money from the school probably 4000
pesos to buy a CPU but that’s not enough, and then borrowed money from English Department
Funds and gathered 2500 pesos and another 2000 from Filipino Department. At
first, we used the obsolete monitor but it’s really hard-headed and not
functioning very well so, it has to be changed. LCD screen type of monitor is
bought. Mind you, not brand new.
What about the room? Well, this
adviser noticed the newly built Comfort Room at the edge of the school.
Property Custodian is asked and was hesitant before until it reached the
principal and serious talks happened. Garage, cannot be used as a room it’s for
vehicles. Library, cannot, most of the teachers used it as faculty. Authority
said, new CR can function as Journalism Corner temporarily. (Hope so, we can
have one, a real journalism room)
Budget? Well, SPAs gathered some
after the principal approved and had given memos for Journalism Funding.
Issues? It’s inevitable.
Intentions and objectives are the best weapons. Whatever negativities proliferate;
it is no match to the fire of good deeds.
6.
What should be expected from the school paper?
As long as there are students who
are capable of expressing their thoughts and ideas the lightning will always
strike fast. It’s time for the UBNHS students to prove their worth as writers.
This is the beginning. A good start. An opportunity.
By the way, four of the students
were able to join a contest. So that’s a good start for competing.
The paper will be full of news soft
news and hard news delivered by intellectual student- writers. Read the next
issue for you to find out.
